MeshCore in South Africa: The Next Evolution of Off-Grid Communication

What is a LoRa Mesh Network?

For the uninitiated, networks like Meshtastic and MeshCore utilize license-free industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) radio bands. By pairing a cheap, low-power LoRa (Long Range) radio node to your smartphone via Bluetooth, you can send text messages, share GPS locations, and chat in public or private channels completely independent of cell towers or the internet.

Because every radio node acts as a relay, messages "hop" from neighbor to neighbor across the city until they reach their destination. It is entirely peer-to-peer, censorship-resistant, and can run indefinitely on small solar setups.

Meshtastic vs. MeshCore: What's the Difference?

The Meshtastic network has enjoyed fantastic growth. In Cape Town alone, local hobbyist radios picked up just over 216 unique Meshtastic nodes in May 2026. It's a fantastic, user-friendly ecosystem for casual users, hikers, and neighborhood watches.

However, as a mesh network grows denser, it faces a technical hurdle: congestion. Meshtastic relies on a broadcast "flood routing" protocol, meaning almost every node tries to repeat every message it hears.

MeshCore is a newer protocol designed from the ground up to solve this infrastructure problem. Here is how the two match up:

Because MeshCore uses an intentional, role-based model, devices are split into distinct jobs. "Companion" nodes (the radio in your pocket) focus purely on your messages and don't drain their batteries constantly repeating everyone else's traffic. Instead, dedicated Repeaters handle the heavy lifting, keeping the radio waves dramatically quieter and vastly more efficient.

The MeshCore Rollout in Cape Town

The local MeshCore landscape is changing fast. In just one week of initial testing in Cape Town, the local footprint surged from roughly 7 testing nodes to 16 active nodes.

Local operators are already taking advantage of MeshCore's unique infrastructure features. For instance, a rooftop node in the city was recently flashed as a MeshCore Room Server. Beyond acting as a high-performance repeater, this node runs a localized, text-based bulletin board. Anyone within range can leave a digital message on the server for other users to read and catch up on later—even if they were completely offline when the message was originally sent.

The expansion plans are ambitious. The community is currently planning several high-site repeaters to seamlessly link users across the entire peninsula. In fact, if the existing Meshtastic high-site repeater on the Du Toit’s Kloof mountains is successfully migrated or dual-flashed to MeshCore, it will instantly link Worcester directly into the Cape Town mesh.
